Susanne Piché never intended to become a project manager. Her career began in technical writing before transitioning into business analysis, a journey defined by learning through action. She asked questions, observed closely, and gradually began to see how various organizational pieces connected.
"I realized you can't manage what you don't understand," she explains. This core insight eventually defined her professional trajectory.
While working at AT&T Mobility in Seattle, Susanne transitioned into formal project work. Having already built a robust foundation in technical systems, the shift felt like a natural evolution. Her deep understanding of "behind-the-scenes" mechanics gave her confidence, yet it also raised the stakes. She was no longer just documenting or analyzing; she was now responsible for the outcome.
One specific project tested her resolve more than any other redesigning the data model for an enterprise incident management system. This was no minor tweak. Because the system touched all of IT, every team relied on it, and any mistake would be immediately visible.
The skepticism was palpable. Some colleagues insisted the task was impossible, while others claimed she would never achieve full sign-off Susanne knew that success would require both technical precision and administrative buy-in. She spent over six months working closely with the core team to nail down the requirements
With the foundation built, she asked for a final two weeks to secure the finish line.
Rather than calling a single high-pressure meeting and hoping for alignment, Susanne spent those final fourteen days walking through the proposed changes with key SMEs and end users. She met with them individually to ensure nothing had been overlooked and to secure formal, written sign-off
Her approach was transparent and inclusive: "Here is what I heard. Tell me what I missed."
By building consensus through six months of preparation and two weeks of dedicated validation, she achieved what many thought was Impossible. The system update launched seamlessly. There was no noise and no pushback People simply used the system and the new data model and moved on. Years later, her original templates were still being used by the organization.
"This is when I knew I could manage and effectively implement very big complex projects," she says.
